Fuck useless people! Bust my ass all day doing most of the work and they want to complain about me not helping turn in tools? Fuck no! You wanna act like a 3 level, I will treat you like a 3 level.
I’m stuck in that place. That place where you want someone but you can’t have them because they’re in a relationship with someone else. You keep trying, you say you will drop it, you say it will work out but, it probably wont. I’m not there, I don’t know what’s going on. I believe everything she tells me with all my heart, don’t get me wrong. It’s just she’s stable right now and, I guess, I’m just a risk? The people in the movies always take a risk but, I guess if you throw a baby in the mix; it’s probably not smart to take the risk. I guess I’ll eventually get over it. I really don’t want to though. Holding on to that moment in my life, makes me love every decision I ever made. At that moment, my life actually made sense. Everything just seemed as if it fell into a place. Now, there’s nothing. No Joy, no PLUR. There are plenty of fish in the sea but, that fish was truly the Rainbow Fish.
I did a comic called Style for some website that i can’t remember the name of back in maybe 1999-2000. It only lasted for a few weeks and was really bad. I was pretty young.
It was about 3 high school girls. The main character was Lauren Wood and the other two girls were Lisa Miller and Kim Pine. The title “Style” was just meaningless — I was really into this Orbital song called Style, and I liked the word. The comic wasn’t about fashion, it wasn’t really about anything. I was trying to be just like Paul Pope and my art was very derivative of his work at the time.
A few years later I resurrected the title and characters for 3 really goofy comedy strips on the Oni Press website. I think it was one per month, and those months were November 2002, December 2002 and January 2003.
I did these strips just before starting work on Lost at Sea, but they are more of a precursor to Scott Pilgrim (which I had already been doing notes and sketches for since around March 2002).
Obviously, Kim Pine would be a major Scott Pilgrim character; the high school backdrop became the basis for Scott’s high school memories; and Lisa Miller is involved in the Scott Pilgrim books too. (Lauren became just a cameo in SP.)
In these strips the characters don’t really have much of a personality. Since I only did three, I didn’t develop it very much beyond silly jokes. The third strip was done when I was sick with a cold, so it kinda sucks, but whatever.
There you have it!
THE COMPLETELY DIFFERENT VOLUME 5
I alluded to this the other day. There was an early draft of volume 5, Scott Pilgrim Vs The Universe, that was very different. It had the same basic structure but it revolved around the fictional “Toronto International Battle of the Bands” — which, obviously, ended up being used as part of the structure for the movie.
Which means, yes, I made up the battle of the bands stuff, I just didn’t use it in the book in the end. There was a two-stage setup — amp vs amp and all that. It would have been really really really hard to draw all this stuff.
Skimming over the old script now, it just tonally didn’t feel right, and I think that’s because at this point (late 2007 through mid 2008) I was spending a lot of time working with Edgar Wright and Michael Bacall on the movie, looking at casting tapes, etc. My original ‘voice’ for Scott & friends kind of got submerged for a minute and it took me several drafts to find it again.
So anyway, the plot of it was that Sex Bob-omb got signed up for the battle of the bands without their knowledge, and it was an obvious trap set by the Katayanagi Twins. The twins are musicians in this version, and also they wear Super Sentai-style masks when they perform, like Daft Punk or something. Sex Bob-omb goes in to the tournament completely unprepared, and they’re terrible, but they keep winning every round anyway (because it’s all a sham). All the other bands in Toronto start hating them.
The rest of the story was pretty much the same — the book was always about the band kinda falling apart and about Scott and Ramona kinda falling apart. It was just a lot bigger and sillier. There was a LOT going on and it would have been really hard to draw and I felt the need to simplify, so it turned into what you all know as volume 5.
Anyway, here are some unused excerpts I thought were amusing!

Scott Pilgrim Vs The World: The Game
Wallace Wells + Online Play DLC
It’s finally coming…
PSN (North America): Tuesday
PSN (Europe): Wednesday
XBLA (worldwide): Wednesday
It looks like it’s $4.99 USD on PSN and I don’t know what that translates to in xbox points.
Q: Why did they make DLC for this game over 2 years later?
A: i have no idea ha ha
Q: Why didn’t the game have online play to begin with?
A: It was a planned feature, but the budget was cut a few months into the project and online play was one of the features that had to be removed in order to finish the rest of the game. (There was lots of other stuff too… it was a bigger game. But that’s a story for another day.)
Alright, have fun, and maybe we’ll play together soon!
[Disclaimer: I didn’t set the price for this, nor do I actually get paid for videogame sales, but I hope you enjoy it anyway. I will be paying for it myself :p]
